"Community and Faith:
A Social History of Religion in Modern Societies"
How important is religion in modern societies? Do modernisation and secularisation go hand in hand? To what extent does religion influence modern societies, be it in politics, culture or economics?
These are some of the central questions that Dr. Martin Lutz (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and his students have explored as part of a postgraduate essay competition on the theme of "Community and Faith: A Social History of Religion in Modern Societies". Asking whether religion is important in modern times, they have looked at how social structures shape continuity or change in religious communities and have compared the social history of different religions in the 19th and 20th centuries in a global perspective.
We are proud to announce our collaboration with Dr. Martin Lutz and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and are delighted that the Berlin Historical Review will be publishing a special issue this summer to showcase the best essays of this competition.
The special issue will include an introduction by Dr. Martin Lutz and will feature contributions from Jesús David Quintero Aleans, Lea Brinkgaard, Padraig Cavanaugh, Tyler Hoerr, Julien Hoffmann, David Lang, Lea Kröner, Farhad Mirza, Jedd Pagsanjan and Justina Smallkyte.
